| thick the pad material was? There should be a small metal tab on one of the front pads that will contact the rotor and make a squeak/squeal noise when the pads are worn down to the point of needing replacement. Look in the picture below and you'll see the silver tab that is riveted to the backing plate - this is the wear tab. It is supposed to make a noise very similar to what you described when it is time to replace the pads.
Other ideas for the brake noise: check for glazed pad surfaces, make sure you have the correct shims on the pads, and get a can of brake cleaner and clean all areas where the pad contacts the caliper to be sure there is no dirt/dust that could be causing the pad to stick. Safety boost: There's a myriad of possible issues here. I'd start with pulling codes from the ECU. Also, check the ignition timing to make sure the timing isn't causing pinging. Use search keywords "safety boost" and "code 34" to look for other possible problems that might be contributing to the problem. Another idea - do a boost leak test. This could also take care of your idle issue as it sounds like you may have a boost leak that might be intermittent. Ticking noise on start up: sounds like a lifter is getting lazy. But also make sure your oil level is correct. I'd also suggest looking through the FAQ section (300ZX FAQ and Auto-FAQ) for other write-ups that will help you on these issues. I hope this info helps you solve some, if not all, of the problems. If you can complete your profile with your location, we can try to point you to a local Z expert as well. Good luck, Dave
